It turns out this happened 300 million years ago, long before the first dinosaurs and mammals appeared. The finding is described in a scientific article published in the journal Nature Communications by a team led by Sabrina Simon of Wageningen University and Research in the Netherlands.
Insects (such as grasshoppers) are a remarkably diverse class of living organisms. Biologists have described more insect species than all other animals combined. The role of “bugs and cockroaches” in the biosphere cannot be overstated! It is no surprise that biologists are eager to study the evolution of crickets in as much detail as possible. Among other things, this will help us understand the threats to the world posed by the extinction of certain species of these arthropods.
“Insects play a vital role in terrestrial ecosystems. To understand how grasshoppers influence ecosystems—whether they support them or threaten them—and what happens when their numbers decline or they even disappear, we first need to understand why the insect class is so species-rich and how it evolved,” Simon explains. Various research groups are focused on studying insect evolution. Participants in this initiative collect and study the transcriptomes (transcribed RNA molecules) of insects, including grasshoppers. As a reminder, RNA sequencing helps us understand which genes are active (expressed) in a cell and which are inactive. Simon and her colleagues drew on this information, asking themselves a simple question: when did grasshoppers and their relatives begin to chirp?

More specifically, the biologists were interested in the evolution of hearing and sound-producing organs in the order Orthoptera (which includes, among others, crickets, grasshoppers, and locusts). Using genetic data, the experts constructed a phylogenetic tree of modern Orthoptera. They determined from which common ancestors modern species inherited their “musical instruments.” Dating using the molecular clock helped determine when these first musicians lived on Earth.
“We constructed a family tree showing when and which species of grasshoppers and their relatives lived on Earth. Additionally, we know which species are capable of producing sound and hearing. This allowed us to create a diagram showing when the first crickets were able to communicate: about 300 million years ago,” says Simon
Three hundred million years ago, the Earth was in the midst of the Carboniferous Period. This period belongs not to the Mesozoic Era, but to the preceding one—the Paleozoic Era. It was then that winged insects first appeared, including the ancestors of today’s orthoptera. Also at this time, the first reptiles had barely appeared, and there were still 100 million years to go before the emergence of dinosaurs.
