The Greeks attributed to it a divine origin. They believed that the white lily, a symbol of innocence and purity, grew from the milk of the gods’ mother, Hera (Juno), who found the baby queen Hercules of Thebes hidden from her jealous eyes and, knowing the divine origin of the baby, wanted to give him milk. But the boy, sensing in her his enemy, bit and pushed her away, and the milk spilled across the sky, forming the Milky Way. A few drops fell to the ground and turned into lilies.

But much earlier than the Greeks, the lily was known to the ancient Persians whose capital was even called Susa, which means “city of lilies”. In ancient Rome, at the feast of Flora, girls competed in a race in honor of the lily flower. Every girl dreamed of winning the grand prize, a wreath of white lilies. Lilies and ears of wheat were used to crown the bride and the groom, wishing them a pure life, full of abundance.

The oldest cultivated plant, the snow white lily can be found in the wild in the countries of the Mediterranean coast, Asia Minor, Israel. According to experts, the white lily, which consists of six petals blooming in the form of Magen David, is the lily that symbolizes the Jewish people. Foreign scholars of biblical texts believe that it is the “lily of the valleys” from the songs of Solomon.

But nowhere has the lily had such historical significance as in France, where it is associated with the names of the founder of the French monarchy of Chlodwig, Kings Louis VII, Philip III, Francis I … Ancient lore tells of the appearance of the lily on the banner of French kings as an emblem of royalty. The fleur de lys (fr.fleur de lys or fleur de lis, literally “flower of the lily”, or lily, or royal lily) is a coat of arms figure, the fourth most popular natural heraldic symbol after the cross, eagle and lion. France was called the kingdom of lilies and the French king was called the king of lilies.
