German Shepherd Drawing Step by Step

This article will describe German Shepherd Drawing in 2 ways! The German Shepherd Dog, whose breed history goes back a long way, was bred in an unthinkably short period of time. It took about 100 years to create one of the most popular breeds. Perhaps the Indian wolf, which inhabited the territory of Western Europe many centuries ago, was the origin of this breed.

From the predator came the bronze dog – an animal that combines the blood of wild and domesticated animals. The bronze dog is attributed to 4000 years B.C. The next stage – domesticated shepherd dog – Hofovart – period 200-400 years ago. Later, some dogs were already called sheepdogs; they were still far from the look of modern service dogs.

According to the etymological dictionary, “sheepdog” has the same root as the word “sheep.” Sheepdogs were dogs that guarded the sheepfold. Schäferhund translates from German as sheep dog or sheepdog, which means “dog guarding the flock.” Thus, the etymology of the word is related to the activity of the animal. The territory of Germany was covered with lush pastures where herds grazed. With someone’s light hand came the word “sheepdogs.”

These animals were mentioned in the 7th century. In the code of laws of the West Germanic Alemannic tribes, killing a shepherd dog was a punishable offence. In the XVIII century, cattle breeding was rapidly developing in Germany. There was a need for powerful dogs that could manage a flock. Four-legged shepherds were highly valued. There appeared to be a tendency to breed dogs with given working characteristics. No one paid much attention to the appearance of animals, and dogs varied greatly in appearance.

Drawing a sheepdog is a challenging task, but here, we tried to simplify the process so that it was clear! Breeding was put on a commercial basis; exceptional standards were not put forward. However, two centers for breeding sheepdogs appeared: Thuringia and Württemberg. These were the names of the most famous kennels, but the dogs were bred throughout the German lands. Dogs from the two centers differed in appearance. Thuringian sheepdogs were:

  • Medium height;
  • Wolf coloring;
  • A ring-tail;
  • Pointed ears.

The lively, agile dogs seemed more attractive than the dogs from Württemberg. The latter were more balanced. Dogs of imposing size, with colored spots on their bodies, could have floppy ears. Despite the differences, owners mated the pets by infusing them with the blood of foreign dogs.

Shepherds were first introduced in 1882. The males Kiras and Greif with light gray fur made a sensation at the exhibition, which gave an impetus to breeding work. The Thuringian kennel gave the world the sheepdogs that started the breed selection. The male Pollux and the female Prima, wolf-like in color and build, produced offspring that were destined to win exhibitions.
